VanMoof error 58: GSM modem does not start
VanMoof S3 / X3 (also S5 / A5 where applicable)Dealer neededSafe to keep riding
The cellular modem in the cartridge fails to boot. Without it the bike has no GSM location, no remote features and cannot report to the VanMoof backend. Riding, Boost and Bluetooth unlock still work. On older S3/X3 this is increasingly common as cartridges age and after moisture damage.
Likely causes
- Modem firmware corrupted after an interrupted update
- Modem chip or its power supply failed on the cartridge board
- Water damage in the cartridge
- Cracked solder joint from years of vibration
- Cartridge connector fault starving the modem of power (see error 17)
How to fix VanMoof error 58
- Hard reset: hold the power button 10 to 15 seconds, wait a full minute, then power on
- Install any pending firmware update with the charger connected and the phone next to the bike
- Leave the bike indoors overnight if there is any chance of moisture in the top tube
- Check whether other cartridge features (Bluetooth, display) are fine; if they are, the fault is isolated to the modem
- If the code persists and you want GSM tracking back, an independent VanMoof-capable shop can test the cartridge; a dead modem generally means a cartridge replacement
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop if the code stays after a reset and firmware update and you want GSM features restored; otherwise the bike remains fully rideable.
Warranty: Warranty from the original VanMoof B.V. died with the 2023 bankruptcy; the relaunched VanMoof (LAVOIE/McLaren Applied) only covers bikes sold by them after the relaunch, so most S3/X3 owners pay for repairs.
Typical cost: Nothing if you accept losing GSM; a cartridge test is about EUR 50-100, a replacement cartridge EUR 300-500 when available.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
Frequently asked
Can I ride with error 58?
Yes. The motor and Bluetooth do not depend on the modem.
Does error 58 mean my VanMoof can no longer be tracked?
Yes, until the modem is fixed. Use a strong lock and treat the bike like any non-connected e-bike.
Is it worth replacing the cartridge for error 58?
Only if GSM tracking is important to you and a cartridge is available at a reasonable price. Many owners choose to ride without it.
