The left handlebar button (bell) has been held or pressed so many times that the firmware flags it as stuck. Nothing is broken in the drive system; the bike keeps riding. The code exists to catch a jammed button or a short in the button wiring.

How to fix VanMoof error 40

  1. Press and release the button a few times; make sure it clicks and returns freely
  2. Clean around the button with a soft brush and a little water on a cloth; do not use a pressure washer
  3. Switch the bike off and on to clear the code
  4. In freezing weather, bring the bike inside to thaw the button before assuming it is broken
  5. If the button stays stuck or the code returns without pressing it, the button module needs replacing: independent VanMoof-capable shop
