VanMoof error 19: Internal battery communication fault
The BMS and the controller are talking, but the data stream inside the battery is faulty. This usually means a problem on the battery PCB itself, a firmware fault in the BMS, or a corrupted communication line. Assist is normally cut for safety.
Likely causes
- BMS firmware crash or corrupted memory
- Water damage on the battery PCB
- Damaged data wires in the battery harness
- Failed cell-monitoring chip on an ageing pack
- Interference after an interrupted firmware update
How to fix VanMoof error 19
- Hard reset with the power button for 10 to 15 seconds and reconnect the app
- Charge fully with the original charger; a full charge cycle sometimes re-syncs the BMS
- Re-run any firmware update from the app with the phone next to the bike and the charger plugged in
- Do not open the battery yourself; the pack is high-energy and the BMS is not user-serviceable
- Book an independent VanMoof-capable shop for a bench test, BMS reflash or battery replacement
Warranty: Batteries on pre-bankruptcy bikes are out of warranty in practice; only bikes bought from the relaunched VanMoof carry a current warranty, so budget for a paid repair.
Typical cost: Diagnosis and BMS reflash around EUR 60-150; battery repair or replacement EUR 350-900 if the PCB is damaged.
Frequently asked
Can I ride with error 19?
No. The controller cuts assist when it cannot trust the battery data, and riding an S3 unassisted is hard work anyway.
Is error 19 dangerous?
Not acutely, but a battery that cannot report its own state should not be charged unattended until it has been checked.
Could a firmware update cause error 19?
An interrupted update can. Re-running the update with a full phone battery and the charger connected fixes it in some cases.
