VanMoof error 18: Battery does not switch on
The controller asked the battery to power up and it did not respond. The pack may be deeply discharged, the BMS may be latched off, or the wake-up signal is not reaching the battery. The bike stays dark or shows the error briefly and shuts down.
Likely causes
- Battery discharged below the BMS wake-up threshold after months of storage
- BMS in protective lock after a fault (see errors 0-15)
- Broken wake-up or enable line in the harness
- Faulty charger port so the pack never received charge
- Cell group failure so the pack cannot supply voltage on demand
How to fix VanMoof error 18
- Connect the original charger and leave it for several hours; check whether the charger LED changes colour at any point
- Try a different wall socket and inspect the charge port on the frame for dirt or bent pins
- Hold the power button 10 to 15 seconds for a hard reset, then try again
- Leave the bike indoors overnight if it was very cold
- If it still stays dead, an independent VanMoof-capable shop can wake the BMS on the bench or test the wake line in the harness
Warranty: Batteries on pre-bankruptcy bikes are out of warranty in practice; only bikes bought from the relaunched VanMoof carry a current warranty, so budget for a paid repair.
Typical cost: A bench wake-up or BMS reset is about EUR 50-120; if cells are gone, a refurbished or new battery is EUR 350-900.
Frequently asked
My VanMoof is completely dead, is that error 18?
Often yes, although a totally dead bike may not even manage to show the code. The recovery path is the same: charge, reset, then shop.
How long can a VanMoof S3 battery sit empty?
Ideally never below 20 percent for more than a few weeks. Several months at zero can push the pack below the point where the BMS will wake up.
Is the charger the problem?
It can be. If you have access to another VanMoof charger of the same type, try it before assuming the battery is dead.
